Shepparton Winery wins
Wine maker, Fred O’Keefe, of Broken River Vineyards, has won the prestigious Exporter Excellence Award as part of the Powercor Business and Excellence Awards on Friday October 16 2009.
Mr O’Keefe, along with his wife, Ruth, and family have taken out the inaugural Exporters Award announced at a gala dinner on Friday night in Shepparton, sponsored by the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce.
The local wine maker has spent the last two years building opportunities for his Broken River Vineyards wines in China and will travel to China again next month to secure further opportunities.
“We are thrilled to have taken out this very important award for Greater Shepparton. We have worked hard to open up export markets for ourselves and see China as a very viable market for our award winning wines.” Mr O’Keefe said.
“We invest heavily in this area to produce our wines and it is wonderful to be recognised for our efforts” Mr O’Keefe said.
“I became interested in the Chinese market when the local market started to be severely affected by the oversupply of wine in Australia and export seemed like a viable alternative strategy.
“In June 2008 I travelled with Campaspe Shire, Mildura Rural Council and Austrade representatives to a five day trade show at Kunming in South West China. Our wines were extremely well received by the Chinese as they suited their palette, especially Fred’s Red Shiraz.”
The first of many orders was sent to Shanghai in September 2008.
A second trade show in Hong Kong (HOFEX) in May this year was also successful.
“Not only have I made good business contacts I have made some very good friends and I am looking forward to another visit to China in December to expand our network of friends and contacts.”
